What is a Personal Constitution?

A Personal Constitution, as I define it, is a system that outlines what is most important to you in your life and is comprised of the following:

A Central Intention

This is typically referred to as a “Mission”, but the term “Mission” has other connotations that I don’t think appropriately encompass what the concept is in its totality. A “Central Intention” is a purposefully decided end goal that you are always striving for. I chose to use the term Mission but others may choose central intention, purpose, etc.

A Life Focus

Sometimes one's Central Intention may be determined to a large degree by chance, and focusing solely on the mission can actually sabotage it; like a Chinese finger trap, you have to go the other way to actualize your intention. For example, My Mission: Be Extraordinary, has many potentials for failure, and if I focused solely on that I wouldn't have much resilience. Whereas, if I focus on Be My Highest Self, everything necessary is under my control, and I stand a better chance of actualizing my Mission. This acts as your North Star.

A Set of Foundational Values

These are the values that you have discerned to be most important to you. These act as your compass - especially during times of uncertainty.

A Set of Life Priorities

These are life-long goals, or “nodes of focus”, and are never finished. They remind you of the ultimate goals for the major dimensions in your life and help you design your long-term, mid-term, and short-term goals to actualize this reality. These act as your map.

Why Have a Personal Constitution?

Have you ever been with someone crying over how they ‘lost what they valued’? Have you ever seen a mid-life crisis?

Life can be a confusing mess sometimes. You've got your day-to-day routines, your long-term aspirations, and a million little decisions to make in between. Not to mention the crises and tragedies that inevitably come to shock all of us. It’s easy to feel like you're just going through the motions without any real sense of direction or purpose, allowing the winds of society to blow you in whatever direction they choose. Most of the modern world is a battle ground designed by PhDs to monopolize your attention and distract you from what matters most to you - like a casino - this is our reality.

A Personal Constitution provides you with clarity and consistency in mind and action. It provides you with a system to keep your focus on what you really care about and a way to measure your adherence to this objective. Without one, it is woefully easy to get distracted and blown off course in life.

How Mine Works

At all times I will be driven by my desire to Be Extraordinary.

At all times I will follow my north star: Be My Highest Self.

In times of uncertainty I will be guided by my Foundational Values they are:

  • Spirituality
  • Health
  • Wisdom
  • Love
  • Integrity
  • Effectiveness
  • Mastery
  • Power
  • Creation
  • Freedom
  • Peace

In times of certainty, I will be guided by my Life Priorities. I have broken down a human’s life into 6 broad categories that I believe any pursuit can be nested under. In order to “Be Extraordinary” I have to address these domains of a human’s life, they are:

  • Personal Development
  • Work & Contribution
  • Resources/Lifestyle
  • Relationships/Community
  • Death & Self-Transcendence (Legacy)

In order to address these broad life categories I have created the following overarching Life Priorities:

  • Grow Forever (Personal Development)
  • Reach for the Divine (Personal Development)
  • Optimize My Body (Personal Development)
  • Infinite Competence (Personal Development)
  • Integral Behavior (Personal Development)
  • Create-Elevate (Work & Contribution)
  • Prosper (Resources/Lifestyle)
  • Elevate Others (Relationships)
  • Leave Something Great Behind (Death & Self-Transcendence)

These Life Priorities are then broken down into Long-Term Goals, Mid-Term Goals & Short-Term goals (or rather, they issues your goals), but those are dynamic and will change whereas my Mission & Life Priorities theoretically will not.
